Welcome to My Interior Design Blog
Creating something different
Welcome to the Spaces by Kelly blog – and thank you for joining my interior design journey!
I wasn’t sure how to write my blog, or more importantly, I wasn’t sure how to make it worthy of you reading it given the amount of interior design websites out there.
I am not going to pretend that I know how to make your dream house appear in a couple of blog posts, or say that I can transform a room in 3 easy steps.
This is a place where you can learn with me. I will share all aspects of my interior design journey – including all the juicy details of life as an interior design student.
My interior design journey so far
The truth is, I am learning all of this as I go. I am balancing my studies and new career path with my other very important job… being a mummy and bringing up my 2 little kids.
I loved Art and Design in school, it was the creative outlet my teenage self much needed and I basically lived in the art classroom during my final years. However, after A-levels I was compelled to go down the ‘sensible route’ and a law degree later I found myself on the way to becoming a solicitor, and eventually a Chartered Tax Advisor.
I never settled in the tax world, and yearned for a creative outlet. It took a long time to build up the courage to admit that I needed to start again. The moment came when I couldn’t justify going back to a job that made me unhappy after maternity leave – if I was going to be leaving my kids for a job, it had better be a job I loved and one they could be proud of.
So there I was, after a 20 year break (and more tax knowledge than anyone should ever need to know), I signed up for a Higher National Diploma (BTEC) in Interior Design with the British Interior Design Academy.
I chose to do the home study route, so I could complete the course in my own time, at my own pace (an absolute necessity as kids are not known to stick to a schedule so I need the flexibility)
The British Academy of Interior Design is accredited by the International Approval and Registration Centre (IARC) and is a BTEC Approved Centre. The assignments are exciting and build up to give me all the skills required for life as an interior designer.
What I also really love about it is that the tutors are all interior design professionals, and are on hand to help with any queries.

I am now on assignment 11 out of 30 and loving every second of it (apart from all the Harvard citing and referencing system – but that is not going to be a blog post you will be glad to hear!) I am also very aware that I am taking a long time to complete the course and am missing the social interactions that come along with a classroom based course.
So I have started this blog in the hope that we can inspire each other. I really want to make a place where interior design enthusiasts, students and dabblers can share their ideas, experiments and adventures.
What’s to come
I will start by sharing how this interior design journey all began – undertaking an open plan kitchen and living area renovation of my own house. I will set out all the steps I followed to realise our dream space.
I will also update you on what I am learning during my course. It is honestly the most interesting course I have ever studied (coming from a tax and law background I am not sure that really means much…but anyway).
I am also hoping to share some of the projects I am undertaking for my own house, and for friends and family.
Please join me for updates on this interior design journey…
